AN ARTIFACT IS AN OBJECT MADE BY HUMAN BEINGS THAT TELLS SOMETHING OF AN EARLIER TIME. IT IS ANY OBJECT THAT HELPS EXPLAIN A CULTURE, A PRACTICE, OR PEOPLE GROUP.

YOUR TASK IS TO CREATE AN ARTIFACT FROM THE TIME OF THE IROQUOIS CONFEDERACY.

-A LONGHOUSE MODEL OR DRAWING

-A TRADITIONAL COSTUME PIECE

-A WAMPUM BELT

-AN ORIGINAL PENCIL DRAWING DEPICTING A HISTORICAL EVENT

YOUR ARTIFACT CRITERIA:

YOUR ARTIFACT CHOICE MUST ALLOW YOU THE OPPORTUNITY TO ADDRESS AT LEAST ONE OF THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:


1. Does the artifact help explain how the Iroquois confederacy was structured?
2. Does the artifact help explain the role and status of women within the Iroquois Confederacy?
3. Does the artifact show something about the six nations?
4. Does the artifact address collective identity? 
5. Does the artifact help to explain the way the Iroquois made decisions?
6. Does the artifact symbolize equity or equality?

7. Does the artifact tell us something significant or very important about how the Iroquois interacted with one another?

HOW TO START

Spend some time researching possible artifacts before you decide on what you want to do. Then choose your artifact and start creating! No computer print-outs allowed - all artifacts must be original, hand-made work.

Download the artifact explanation chart below. You will need to fill this out and submit it with your artifact. Make sure you can answer the questions on the chart for your artifact!!!
